The Brainy-USB is a low-cost kit based on an 8-pin PIC microcontroller. Using the provided PCB and supplied parts you can assemble your own board, program it on a PC or Mac using Flowol 3, test it in use (see ICE) and then download the program for standalone operation.

The board has 3 outputs, one of which can drive a motor, the others can operate LEDs. The board also has one digital input.

Unlike other kits, it has been designed to be easily attached to working models such as a fairground ride made from Kre8, or similar, using the 5mm diameter corner holes. Connecting wires to the inputs or outputs is done by soldering and anchoring in place using the small drilled hole. Alternatively screwdriver connectors can be soldered onto the board.

ICE (In-Circuit-Emulation): This makes modifications and refinements easy before downloading to the microcontroller. The user's Flowol program can be 'stepped through' on the computer and operate the model at the same time. When the user is happy with the program, it can be downloaded, and the connection to the computer can be removed to allow the Brainy-USB to work independently.

Brainy-USB is supplied either as a kit ready to be soldered together, or pre-assembled. Each kit includes a PCB, FlowIC microcontroller chip, 3.5mm socket for USB cable, resistors, capacitors, diodes, battery holder and clip and a leaflet listing web links to obtain free downloadable instructions and all the other help to get you going.
